GPSBabel 1.4.0 Released

Mon, 06/28/2010 - 12:50

Via email I learned about the release of the open source GPSBabel version 1.4.0. From the announcement: "The change that most of you will notice first is that we've completely replaced the graphical user interface. So far in the project, we've had a different GUI for each operating system, each written in a completely different language. Khai Mong contributed a new GUI written in Qt that lets us all rally our efforts behind one code base for all the operating systems. It takes the best features from our previous OS/X and Windows versions and makes them available everywhere. Notably it offers a reasonable set of filters, can map data, knows device names, remembers previous settings, has automatic update checking, and more. It also lays infrastructure for language translations. We have German, Spanish,Russian French, Hungarian, and Italian in progress and are trying to make it easy for non-programmers if you want to help translate GPSBabel. You can see screen shots of some of the existing translations." Amongst the long list of new features: KML writer now sets the extents of the time sliders automatically for Google Earth 5.0, can now generate gx:Track for Google Earth 5.2. See also previous GPSBabel stories below.

FBI investigates AT&T security breach

Thu, 06/24/2010 - 13:53

Sunday, June 13, 2010

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched a probe into a security breach that allowed hackers to retrieve 114,000 e-mail addresses of iPad users on the AT&T network.

The FBI announced the investigation Friday, which will determine exactly what allowed a group of hackers using the name "Goatse Security" to access the data. The security breach was first announced by the blog Gawker on Wednesday. The FBI has since asked Gawker Media LLC, the owners of the site, to retain all information relating to the incident. The company was also involved in another recent case with Apple Inc., which included the iPhone 4. Gawker said that it does not believe it is the main target of this FBI investigation.

Already — iPhone 4 Reception Problem

Thu, 06/24/2010 - 12:30

It's possible that simply holding the new iPhone in your hand could kill the reception. The problem seems to be attributable to the antenna band. Is this a firmware issue?

GeoServer 2.0.2 release

Tue, 05/25/2010 - 16:00

To meet the growing demand for a geospatial server that meets the open standards set by the Open Geospatial Consortium, the GeoServer community has worked hard to release the new GeoServer 2.0.2. This release includes almost 100 bugfixes and new features.

As previously mentioned, GeoServer now provides support for Oracle Georaster, custom database layouts for image data and polymorphism.

Have you ever wondered what geographical area an EPSG code covers? A new feature has been added to showcase the different projections visually, by showing a map of the projection’s area of validity in the same CRS. Here are three examples of this: EPSG:2964, EPSG:3032, EPSG:22184.

To add to this, we have also added a default style preview in the layer publishing configuration.

The rendering subsystem has been improved to include parameter substitution, meaning you can pass parameters down from a GetMap request into your SLD for dynamic styling purposes.

The ability to do geometry transformations, included in GeoServer 2.0.1 without much fanfare, now has been completely documented.

Building image pyramids just got easier: gone are the times where you had to manually build each level mosaic and configure the main property file by hand. The current pyramid extension can do this for you provided it is given a suitably configured directory set. See the pyramid tutorial for more details.

Finally, this release of GeoServer implements the GetStyles optional WMS method allowing a user to retrieve the definition of all styles attached to a specific WMS layer, see the following link for an example:
http://demo.opengeo.org/geoserver/wms?request=GetStyles&layers=topp:states&service=wms&version=1.1.0

Thanks to everyone who have worked hard over the past few months adding features and fixing bugs, in order to make this release happen. As usual, we encourage you to download, try it out, and provide feedback on the users mailing list.
